Act Now! Won’t Last Long! Going Fast!

You’ve seen the headlines before.  Just look in any newspaper.  It’s like the whole world is on sale.  But there is usually a catch. There’s only one left, or the one you want is slightly damaged.  Or, the seller is just trying the old Bait & Switch tactics to get you to come in.  Once you’re there, Wham!

Well, this time is no different, except that there is no bait & switch tactic (I promise).

This weekend, one of the larger home builders in the area, John Buchan Homes, is having a Model Home Furniture Sale here in Woodinville, WA.  That’s right, you can now own some of the same furniture that you’ve drooled over while touring new construction homes.

The sale dates are:

Friday, June 8, 2012 9:00am – 4:00pm
Saturday, June 9, 2012 9:00am – 1:00pm

Click HERE for the link to more information on the dates and location of the sale.

P.S. This would be a great opportunity to “Stage” your home if you are planning to sell in the near future, or to furnish your new home!

What’s Green And Can Fit A Body Inside?

What’s Green And Can Fit A Body Inside?

a). The Green Lantern’s body suit.
b). One of the pods from the movie “Invasion Of The Body Snatchers”.
c). The latest trend in home building.

Since this Blog is centered around real estate, you’ve probably already guessed that the appropriate answer is C (although A is technically correct and B is half correct since the movie was originally shot in B&W).  Yes, I am referring to a trend that is considered “green” (not the color, but the effort to save our world by changing our lifestyles and taking our environment into consideration).

Could you be a pea in a pod?

The days of the McMansion are coming to an end.  Small is big and Big is small these days.  Pod housing is a growing trend, and for good reason.  Not only is the footprint smaller and more energy efficient, but the manufacturing process can be streamlined, resulting in pre-fabricated kits which can be built quicker and with less waste byproduct.

The biggest hurdle for the supporters of this type of housing, is getting mass consumer acceptance. In other countries, minimalist housing is the norm (see video below).

I’m not sure if I could live in a 300 square foot apartment, but from the video above, it appears that the occupant isn’t sacrificing much!

What do you think? Could you live comfortably in a pod unit?  Leave a comment!

I Blame Starbucks For My Composting Addiction

Addiction – Part II

Coffee groundsIt all began one winter day back in 1996.  I remember it all so vividly.  You never forget your first time, do you?  You can read about my first time [read here] if you really want…  From that day forward, I’ve been downing mochas on a regular basis.  The byproduct of making coffee is of course coffee grounds, and being the naturally inquisitive person that I am, I started reading about how coffee grounds could be used as compost in the garden for acidic plants.  I’m never one to just dabble, because when the addiction hits, it hits hard. Food Waste In America

blogactiondaybloggerbagde1

Today is Blog Action Day for 2011.  It is the one day of the year that this organization attempts to get bloggers all over the world to blog about one particular topic that affects everyone.  This year’s topic is FOOD.

While some bloggers may choose to blog about their favorite restaurant or their favorite food, I’m choosing to blog about food waste.  While thinking about my topic for today, I came across a previous blog post that cited some statistics about food waste in America.  I didn’t research the authenticity of the data cited, but on the surface, the numbers are staggering.  Here are just a few statistics:

  • A report completed in 1997 cited a statistic of 91 Billion pounds of food waste in 1995 by consumers and food service.
  • Food disposal costs the US about $1 Billion each year.
  • Households waste approximately 14% of their food purchases each year; 15% of this waste is still within the expiration but never opened.
  • An average family of 4 tosses out $590 of food each year in meat, fruits, vegetables and grains.  This doesn’t even include packaged food that gets thrown out! Read the rest of this entry »

What lurks in Those Seattle Victorian Homes?

Older home with lead based paint

Older home with lead-based paint

As a child, I was initially raised in a very old apartment building in San Francisco, CA.  I spent countless hours looking outside the bedroom window and down at the street, much like the child in the photo above. My mom even tells stories of me as a baby, chewing on the wood of the sills and other painted objects. “We were so poor that we couldn’t afford teething toys…”. Read the rest of this entry »

Talk Dirty to Me…

Concrete pipes

A large scale version of my septic system

No, this isn’t about the song from the musical group Poison. Nor is this an explicit request. It’s more like a session of potty talk for grown-ups.

Living with a Septic System

I grew up in the city. We had sewers. When you live on sewers, you don’t worry about what happens once you’ve done your business. That’s because the sewer company maintains the pipes once it leaves your property. When you live on septic, the pipes never leave your property. That means your business remains your business…

My Woodinville Home…

Is on a septic system. Actually, my home shares the land with the septic system. Until recently, I never gave it another thought.  I had the tank pumped out as recommended by the King County Health Department. That’s when my troubles began. Read the rest of this entry »

3 updates that DID NOT help sell this Lynnwood WA home

STOPWhen selling your house, it is generally in your best interest to de-clutter, clean, and update it so that potential buyers will view it at it’s best. Before doing so, I suggest that you ask your Realtor for his/her opinion. I see a lot of homes each week as I preview and show them to my buyer clients. I like to take photos of homes that I think serve as great (or not so great) examples of what sellers have done in their home.

What buyers look for.

Two rooms that get used the most in the home are the kitchen and bathroom. Makes sense, doesn’t it? What goes in must eventually come out. So, it is imperative that these two rooms are clean and show well. Read the rest of this entry »

Cleaning can be sweet!

There is nothing sweeter than a clean home, wouldn’t you agree? But with today’s hectic lifestyle, who has the time?

Should I hire a housekeeper?

I live in an affluent area, surrounded by Hi-tech millionaires.  They have the disposable income to pay for nannies and housekeepers.  But, after that whole Meg Whitman – Illegal Alien debacle, I’m a bit leery about hiring a housekeeper.  Besides, I don’t know about you, but I’m generally frugal with my money. I have a hard time  paying someone else to do something that I can do just as good. That’s right, I’m a very thorough cleaner. But, I hate to do it! Read the rest of this entry »

“Green” trends for 2011

Just this past year, I received a “Green” certification from the Earth Advantage Institute. I still have much to learn about the processes involved, but I find the premise and ideas fascinating. Although I’ve reduced my carbon footprint by a significant amount this past year, I realize that there is much more that I could be doing…

This “Top 10” list is a good place to start if you’re wanting to become more eco-aware… I’d love to hear your thoughts. Are you are “green” as you could be?
